VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning)
The MAT Program delivers a wide range of ‘Life Skills’ Programs to schools and community based organizations within Melbourne’s metropolitan region. A significant component of these programs is MAT Peer Educators who are young people who have completed the appropriate training and who assist in group program planning, delivery and evaluation in primary schools. (See Peer Educator Program information sheet) The Peer Educator Program is also designed as a VCAL subject.

Peer Educator Program
The MAT Peer Educator program is a program that provides young people with structured and supervised opportunities for personal development. Peer Educators experience success through the development of leadership skills, self esteem and self confidence as role models for their slightly younger peers. (E.g. Yr 10s with Yr 8 students)

Life Skills – Adolescent Program
MAT Program - Life Skills groups aim to provide young people with:

  • A tool kit of life skills enabling them to make more effective progress with the issues relevant to their lives
  • An active and interesting learning environment that supports young people who struggle to learn in more traditional ways
  • The MAT Program does not teach students combat or weapons training techniques

W.O.W – Way of the Warrior – Active Healthy Life Skills – Community Program
The ‘Way of the Warrior’ is a physically active therapeutic group program that combines the principles of traditional martial arts with a structured opportunity to develop confidence, self esteem and a sense of belonging for boys who may have social/emotional and/or behavioural issues between 6 and 12 yrs old.

CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service)
The Martial Art Therapy Program (MAT) is an active therapeutic modality that combines the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation with those of traditional martial arts training techniques. The program aims to provide young people who are living with mental health issues with new skills to manage the challenges in their lives. Sessions are designed to support adolescents develop a greater sense of ability to own and manage their long term health.

The Healthy Girls (Wushu Way) ‘Life Skills’ program is an 8 week physically active therapeutic group program that combines the principles of traditional martial arts with a structured opportunity for girls to develop confidence, self esteem and a sense of belonging.

The Healthy Girls (Wushu Way) ‘Life Skills’ program is an 8 week group program that may form part of a Healthy Girls - Secondary School program and teaches life skills through a physically active therapeutic group program that combines the principles of traditional martial arts with a structured opportunity to develop confidence, self esteem and a sense of belonging.

Individual Program
Referrals to the MAT Individual Program are taken from a variety of government, community and private sources such as schools, Child Protection, CAMHS, community organisations such as family support agencies, foster care, residential care, migrant and refugee services, homelessness and domestic violence services, drug and alcohol services and from parents and carers. Refferals are mixed gender- ranging from children through to young adults.

Disability
The MAT Program is an active therapeutic modality that combines the principles of martial arts with techniques for teaching young people who have various levels of ability. The program does not teach participants how to fight with no instruction in street fighting, throwing or weapons techniques.

Active Healthy Living Parent/Child Group
Objectives:

To provide a structured opportunity engage parents and children in a series of active, fun martial art based activities to support family connectedness and fun.

Sessions explore:

  • respect, responsibility and success
  • coping skills and managing conflict
  • making choices
  • self control
  • dealing with challenges
  • managing strong feelings
  • help children feel connected to themselves, their families and school community

Hastings Way Of The Warrior (W.O.W.) Peer Education Program
W.O.W. is an active, therapeutic, Martial Arts based Life Skills Program with a successful history of teaching boys new methods of dealing with the way they think and feel.

The Program has been funded in this region to work with a selected group of primary school age boys who have challenging or concerning behaviours and will be delivered at the Hastings Neighbourhood Renewal Centre over eight weeks in Term four 2008.
